Chronic Back PAin

Question:

Have you tried vitamins or nutriceuticals?  i don't know what kind of pain you have but if it is joint or muscle related you might try BiotrexVitamins.com and look at Senior+ or Sports+ formulas.  If not that you might want to try ArthroSport but I'm not sure who makes that one.  I hope I helped.

Thanks for the words of hope. I still have had no luck at finding a pain doc. I wish docs. understood the difference between dependance and addiction. Keepup the dialog. Craig

Hi I am new to the gruop and have been reading postings for quite a while. I live in Indiana and am desperatly seeking a pain management doctor. I am currently on 100 Duragesic pachtes. My family doctor prescribes for me. He was also giving me Acqtic suckers (same medicine) for breakthrough pain. He has now informed me that he can only prescribe the Duragesic and not breakthruogh pain meds. I have had 2 back surgeries that gave little or no relief. I am wondering if anyone knows of a good pain doctor in or around the Indy area. I would very much appreciate any help that is out there. Also, how does anybody deal with guilt and perceptions involved with being in chronic pain. The pharmacist at my local drugstore even gives me th "look" and I know him and have been using him for 6 years. Please help Craig

THANK YOU EVERYONE for the response. I hope I can find a doctor with the info provided. I have been dnied appts. becuase of having seen Dr. Lievertzs. He in my opion was a good doc that got greedy. I only wish he could see what his greed has done to the patients that TRUSTED him, and to the doctors that are now even more SCARED to effectively treat chronic pain. His partner would not see me because of the DEA. I truly understand what WE ALL live with everyday. PAIN. At least I have found a group to sound off with. Do most members feel like they are criminals because of the pain and the docs. and the pharmicists? I hate walking in to the drugstore just to fill my meds. Just today my family doc. voiced concerns about addiction to pain meds. I told him that i have been on meds. ever since the surgrey and before(1996). But as he is telling me this he ups my Duragesic patch to 125 mcg. and takes away my breakthrough meds. The patch does help but sometimes most the breakthrough pain is the worst. Know he will only teat me until I find a pain doc. This creates a whole new set of issues by having to start with a new doc. Thanks for listening Craig

Craig, I also use the duragesic patches 100mcg every 48 hours.  See if your Doctor would allow you to change the patch every 48 hours and not every 72 hours.  I find I use very little break through meds this way.  Very little. Sue We survive together or not at all.

Craig, I've been working on this for several yrs myself.  I'm actually a member of Narcotics Anonymous and I consider myself "clean" even though I have to take large doses of pain meds. Things have really changed alot in my area.  We now even have a special mtg of N.A. for people "Living with Illlness and Injury in Recovery."  I can't tell you what a big step that is.  At least half the people in the mtg were in recovery for many yrs when they got struck with chronic pain and now have to use opiates.  I went thru about 2 yrs feeling yucky about it and wondering if I was still clean or not even though I have never abused my prescriptions, run out early or anything of that nature.  I know the N.A. part probably doesn't apply to your situation, but I just wanted to let you know that I certainly understand!  I, too, got sick of the pharmacists smirks and remarks.  I have finally found a nice pharmacy where I'm not treated that way anymore.  the worse thing I had to go thru recently was having a back operation by a surgeon who thought he was God and tried to withdraw me in the hosp.  He's not my pain mgmt doc, just a very good surgeon.  He finally gave up and had to call in a clinical pharmacologist to handle the meds because I got very ill and my blood pressure was sky high. Good luck to you and remember you aren't doing this to have fun or get loaded.  You are in serious pain. Be kind to yourself.  It also helps me to refer to my meds as meds, not narcotics or drugs, if that makes sense.
